A kitchen cabinet width guide is most useful when every number is tied to a cabinet type. A 12-inch upper cabinet, a 12-inch drawer cabinet and a 12-inch-deep tall cabinet solve different planning problems even though the same number appears in their specifications.

Start with the cabinet type, not only the width

Use 10- and 12-inch cabinets where the cabinet list calls for them

A narrow cabinet can complete a planned run, but the function must be clear. The current 10-inch-wide, 84-inch-high, 12-inch-deep tall cabinet is a shallow pantry-category cabinet. Its page identifies the width, overall height and depth together, and notes that the tall cabinet ships in two sections. That is different from a 10-inch-wide base or upper position.

The current 12-inch-wide, 24-inch-high upper cabinet lists an 11-3/4-inch cabinet-box depth and a 12-5/8-inch depth including the door. Current upper cabinets from 9 through 19 inches wide use a single door, so opening direction and nearby walls matter. A narrow wall cabinet placed at the end of a run may also require a filler or side panel shown on the final cabinet list.

Never treat a narrow cabinet as an automatic filler. A cabinet has doors, interior space and installation requirements; a filler is a finishing component. Keep the two line items separate when checking the order.

Treat 17- and 19-inch positions as separate specifications

For either width, confirm the position against the approved plan and the surrounding components. Check whether the door swings toward a wall, appliance, handle or perpendicular cabinet. Also confirm whether the finish requires an exposed side panel. A width that fits the wall measurement can still create an unusable door swing or an incomplete finished end.

Use a 22-inch drawer cabinet only when the drawer configuration is confirmed

The current 22-inch-wide two-drawer cabinet is listed at 34-1/2 inches high and 23-1/2 inches deep, with 20-inch drawer depth. The width does not identify the number of drawers.
